Snowflake Moray Eel (Echidna nebulosa)
The Snowflake Moray Eel is a hardy and striking saltwater species, easily recognized by its mottled white and black body patterned with golden “snowflake” spots. Known for its bold appearance and curious behavior, this eel spends much of its time weaving in and out of rockwork, emerging at feeding time with an impressive display of jaw movements. Despite their predatory nature, they are among the more docile morays and can make a fascinating centerpiece for larger aquariums.
Size: Typically grows up to 24 inches in length
Country of Origin: Indo-Pacific region, including Hawaii
Latin Name: Echidna nebulosa
Care Level: Moderate – requires a secure aquarium with plenty of caves and hiding spots, as they are escape artists
Snowflake Moray Eels are carnivores that thrive on a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and fish. They are not considered reef safe with small crustaceans or ornamental invertebrates, but they generally ignore corals, making them suitable for fish-only or carefully planned reef systems.
