Description
Engineer Goby (Pholidichthys leucotaenia)
The Engineer Goby, sometimes called the Convict Goby, is a fascinating species known for its unique transformation in appearance as it matures. Juveniles display striking black-and-white vertical stripes resembling a school of juvenile catfish, while adults develop bold horizontal striping. Active burrowers, they are well-known for rearranging substrate and rocks, “engineering” their environment to create tunnels and hiding places. Though often mistaken for true gobies, they are actually more closely related to cichlids, adding both intrigue and character to a marine aquarium.
Size: Can grow up to 12 inches in length
Country of Origin: Indo-Pacific
Latin Name: Pholidichthys leucotaenia
Care Level: Moderate – requires a deep sandy substrate and stable rockwork due to burrowing behavior
